5 Essential Summer Safety Tips

5 Essential Summer Safety Tips

As the sun shines and the days grow longer, it’s time to embrace the joys of summer while keeping safety a priority. Below are five essential safety tips to follow to ensure you have both a fun and safe season:

1. Prevent Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is when your body temperature increases significantly over a short period, and you cannot get it under control. It is the most dangerous kind of heat-related illness and can spiral to impact other organs and systems in your body. Indicators that one may be experiencing a heat stroke include excessive sweating, hot or dry skin, and even confusion.

While laying out on the beach or playing a game of tennis may be some of your favorite activities, you must be conscious of how much time you spend outside under the sun. You can still do these activities, but drinking lots of water and pacing yourself on a hot day is essential.

2. Use Sunscreen

You’ve probably experienced a time when you forgot to reapply sunscreen or put on any at all. Then, after spending hours outside, you come home to see that your skin is burned. UV rays from the sun give us Vitamin D, which supports bone health, lowers blood pressure, helps regulate our immune system, and boosts our mood. However, too much exposure to intense UV rays is harmful. This is why you should use sunscreen when spending significant time outdoors and reapply it every couple of hours.

3. Stay Hydrated

Water! Water! Water! Drinking water is imperative for your health. Whether it is summer or another time of year, the importance of staying hydrated does not diminish. When it is especially hot in the summer, you can get dehydrated and, therefore, should drink lots of water. You can purchase a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day. If you want something with a bit more flavor, sports drinks are filled with electrolytes and can help you stay hydrated. Avoid consuming too much alcohol when out in the heat because that will dehydrate you more. Moral of the story – drink water!

4. Wear Proper Clothing

In the summer, you may be hot from the heat and want to throw on shorts and a tank top. While this is an acceptable option, loose, breathable, light-colored fabrics are really what you should be wearing. These kinds of fabric reflect the sun and, thus, keep the heat away from you.

5. Have a First-Aid Kit Handy

As you spend your summer adventuring, unexpected accidents are bound to happen. For that reason, it would be wise to have a first-aid kit easily accessible. There are compact and portable kits with bandages, wipes, tweezers, and more that can easily fit in your purse or backpack. While you may be confident that nothing will go wrong, prioritizing safety is always a smart choice.

Make the most of your summer while also prioritizing safety by incorporating these five essential safety tips into your routine.
